Farewell (By Mr. Kevin Bushor, 5th degree black belt)
We are all tied to the military in one way or another. Your parents are in the military, retired from the military, or you or your spouse are in the military or have been at one time. One of the things you can count on in the military is that you have to move every few years. Unlike Taekwon-Do schools not on or near military bases, our students generally only stay for two or three years and then they have to move on because of a PCS, retirement, or college. Over the past few years Master Todd and I have been very fortunate to be able keep our students and parents for long periods of time, but our luck seems to have run out this summer. We will be losing a number of our long time students, as well as some or our newest students. Ms. Jackie and Nikki Brumbaugh will be leaving this summer, moving to Idaho. Mr. Randall and Garrett Hake and Mr. Richard and Benjamin McVay will also all be following their dads to new assignments. Mr. Albert Kline will be leaving in July and Ms. Alyssa Dumbra will be moving with her parents later this summer. Ms. Catherine Hock was only with us a short time before moving to Texas to work towards her Doctorate Degree. The Cashdollars moved earlier this year, and the list seems to go on and on…
We have lost many wonderful students in the past, and we know that many of our current and future students will eventually leave us. We hate to see any of our students depart, and we hope they find a school to continue their training or can open their own schools. Please join Master Todd and me in wishing them well as they move forward in their lives and their Taekwon-Do training.
Summer & Events (By Master Ricky Todd, 7th degree black belt)
The summer is here and many of you will be taking vacations. Please ensure if you are going to be out of class that you notify both the Youth Center and us. The Youth Center will continue to charge you for class unless you notify them. It is required etiquette that you notify us when you are going to miss class for any reason. As you may remember we decided to skip the nationals and reduce a few of our events for this year to allow everyone to be able to budget properly for events in 2009. I sincerely hope you make it a plan to attend the summer camp this year. We did not have a camp last year and this is a great opportunity to spend time training for an entire weekend and enjoy your fellow students outside of the typical class setting. If you talk with the students that have attended camps in the past they have experienced a great time. The facilities are top notch and you can train with different instructors and students from different states who all do the same Taekwon-Do as we teach.
I also hope you make room in your plans to attend the tournaments later this year. In September the Battle of the Belts is a great tournament in Missouri. The level of competition is roughly the same as we experienced at our tournament this year, however, it is typically a larger tournament. For those students wanting a little more challenging competition the tournament in Denver in October is a great event. This is one of the largest and most challenging tournaments aside from the Nationals. Again I hope you make room in your budgets to attend as many events as possible this year.
I do understand the financial situations for some students and through the years I had to pick and choose what events I could attend also, especially when coupled with test fees or the many other required fees. However I chose to attend as many Taekwon-Do events as I could and absorb all the information and experience. These courses, tournaments, camps and seminars hopefully helped me attain my current status and level of knowledge. It's not an easy road to making your black belt or any of the advanced degrees. It takes a sacrifice of time, effort (unfortunately money) and sometimes missing other events. As I said I do understand but I do want to stay informed of what you are doing. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you need help in determining what events you should attend.
